OUR AUSSIE FAQ
HOW MANY YEARS HAVE YOU BEEN AROUND AUSSIES?

Throughout three generations our families have raised standard (full-sized) purebred Australian Shepherds. In the early years; we showed and bred aussies. Our parents kennel name was Parkview’s Aussies. For several years my work schedule didn’t permit the time necessary to properly raise puppies so we considered our aussies as loyal friends and protectors. Since moving to South Dakota and getting married…now as time allows, our ranch lifestyle complements breeding, training and selling beautiful, smart and talented aussies again.

During the Summer, our daughter comes up from Kansas with her two aussie females. Early, in the Summer, she works on their cattle training while in South Dakota. As the third generation; she also carries on the tradition of breeding, raising and selling quality aussies that are placed in wonderful family homes, farms and ranches across the country. She recently acquired a beautiful blue merle male, Mario, that already had conformation points. She started his obedience training and immediately won several awards in the showring before he was even age two. Now that Mario is two, he will actively participate in agility classes as well. Watch for Mario's progress as the years go by. We are excited about his future, eventually this smart, handsome and talented boy will sire beautiful lil aussies as well.

Our parents were instrumental in developing the ASC of Kansas in the 70’s and early 80’s. They held many sanctioned dog shows with conformation, obedience, showmanship, working stock dog trials and clinics in Central Kansas. We attended and showed at other state affiliate shows back in those days and ASCA National Specialty shows, as well. As kids growing up in an aussie family, it was truly inspiring watching our parents and these other fine foundation breeders work together and lead by example. They always wanted to do what was best for the breed as a whole, not just for their own kennel.

WHAT DO YOU BASE YOUR BREEDING PROGRAM ON?

We base our modern day aussies on the type of all-around aussie that our parents and other foundation breeders raised thirty five years ago. We start out with a breeding pair of aussies that are conformationally correct and colored according to ASCA breed standards. We also make sure that our potential breeding stock are intelligent, well-mannered and out of working stock dogs that are registered before we consider adding them to our breeding program. Our dogs are registered with one or more of the following associations: American Stock Dog Registry - ASDR, National Stock Dog Registry - NSDR, American Kennel Club - AKC and/or Australian Shepherd Club of America - ASCA.

HOW MANY LITTERS DO YOU HAVE A YEAR?

Depends on the year; last year we had six litters. This year, we have plans on two to three litters, later on in the year. Since we ranch for a living, we always want to make sure that we have enough time available. This way each puppy can be lovingly handled as much as possible so they can have the best start possible. Of course its fun to have puppies around, but we take it serious about raising quality well-mannered puppies, not a quantity of them.

WHY BUY A REGISTERED AUSSIE FROM YOUR RANCH?

The Australian Shepherd breed was originally founded to be working stock dogs. Why buy an aussie that a breeder says are out of working bloodlines somewhere down the pedigree when you can have one that are out of actual stockdogs. It’s a rare find, in this day and age, to have aussies that are actual working ranch dogs that are conformationally correct and are marked beautifully, according to ASCA standards.

WHAT KIND OF THINGS DO YOUR AUSSIES DO?

Our aussie dogs are high energy, extremely intelligent, agile, and subtle when needed. They are quick enough to turn a cow or bull when asked, yet calm enough to help gather and move a herd of protective mother cows and their babies. Occassionally, there have been times when we rely on them to assist gathering other livestock on the ranch such as ducks, guineas, chickens and turkeys. This is a great exercise to always teach patience since they have to go at a slower pace than cattle. An outgoing, smart, eager to please personality is a must for our ranch dogs. We train our aussies basic obedience along with some of our own special commands. We feel that communcation is the key to any successful relationship. We even teach a few tricks when we have a little time.

DO AUSSIES MAKE GREAT PETS?

We have never considered our aussies just as pets, but throughout our lifetime, we feel that our aussies have been a blessing. For three generations, our families have never bred another type of dog. Aussies are always loyal and try to protect those they love from harm, just as we do the same for them as well. No matter our age, aussies always bring joy to our lives. We are always amazed at how each pup in a litter has such unique personalities just as people do. It’s also a delight that each of our four generations of dogs that we currently have, still love to play and that they still consider their work a pleasure. We find that aussies have a tendency to take on their owners personality. If a person is calm then an aussie is a mirror image to that and the same goes for a high energy person then the aussie will also love to be active as well. Just as they learn each day from us, we also learn many lessons in life from them.

WE LOVE OUR MODERN DAY AUSSIES & HOPE YOU WILL TOO!!
